Lixus Morocco Has Largely Unexplored And Unexcavated Ruins
Perched on a hilltop overlooking the sea, surrounded by hills and forests, with views of the serpentine waters of the Wadi Loukkos River and down to the ocean, Lixus Morocco is a wonderfully scenic site with some impressive ruins of a Roman imperial outpost.
Settled by the Phoenicians in the seventh century BC and later an important Carthaginian site, Lixus Morocco remains a most impressive ruin, for its relics as well as its stunning location.

Largely unexplored and unexcavated, Lixus Morocco has the ruins of an ampitheatre dating back to the first century AD, which would have held a few hundred people. Behind it are the baths, with spectacular mosaics that remain largely intact, except for some damage caused by local children playing in the unguarded area. Unfortunately, one of the victims was the face of the sea god, Neptune, in the centre of one of the largest and most impressive mosaic panels.

Also here is the Christian basilica, located right in the centre of Lixus. Although not as architecturally striking as some of the other buildings, it is still in good condition considering age and is worth a look, particularly from its unadorned roof, offering sweeping views of the valleys below.
If you can imagine back 2,000 years, it would be easy to realise that Lixus Morocco could quite easily have been one of the most beautiful Roman cities in existence.
