Shanghai Groundscraper Hotel Expected to be Ready by 2015

Shanghai Groundscraper Hotel Expected to be Ready by 2015

The concept of a groundscraper or an earthscraper has been around for some time now. For the last five years the Shanghai Shimao Property Group has been working on the concept to turn it into reality as the Intercontinental Shimao Shanghai Wonderland. All the planning and designing for the ambitious project has been completed and the actual construction work on the unique structure has started. The structure is coming up in an abandoned quarry at the foot of Tianmashan Mountain, some 45 kilometres southwest of the city center. It is a 100 meter deep pit in which the structure will rise to create a 19 storied hotel.

The hotel will be a part of a 428.000 square meter theme park. The 19 storied structure will have only three floors rising above the ground where as the rest of the structure will be below ground level in the pit. The last two levels at the bottom will feature an underwater restaurant and an aquatic complex offering facilities for various water based sports. Another highlight at the bottom of the pit will be a ten meter deep aquarium showcasing unique and rare marine life.

Another unique feature of the complex is a 60 meter glass curtain wall running next to the main structure. It will be set up in such a way that it will resemble a running waterfall. The natural cliffs next to the main structure will also be developed for outdoor activities like bungee jumping and rock-climbing. The resort complex is expected to become operational in the 2014-15 holiday season. The project cost has been estimated to be in the region of $555 million but the final cost is likely to rise further. And because of such large investment in the 380 room luxury hotel the room rates will have to be kept high. The rates are expected to start from $320 a night.

Bandiagara Plateau Mali Also Known As Land Of The Dogons

Bandiagara Plateau Mali Also Known As Land Of The Dogons

Amidst the stunning cliffs and sandy plateau of Mali in Western Africa, the Cliffs of Bandiagara on the Bandiagara Plateau are home to one of the few remaining communities still practising many age-old traditions and rituals. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Bandiagara Plateau Mali have been recognised for their natural beauty as well as their historical significance in understanding these ancient cultures through their surviving traditions.

Bandiagara Plateau Mali

The Bandiagara Plateau Mali , one of the main centres of Dogon culture, houses various small peripheral villages of the four Dogon  tribes who migrated from the land of Mande centuries ago: the Dyon, Ono, Arou and Dommo. The village communities consist of desert-edge subsistence farmers divided into ‘living men’ and ‘dead men’, existing in symbiotic union with each other as well as having a symbolic attachment to their environment. Both of these relationships are represented in the ancient rock art that appears in and around the Bandiagara.

The village of Sangha, the most populated in the area, is celebrated for its continued practice of rock carving and its ancient circumcision ceremonies that have taken place here for more than a millennium, complete with the use of beautifully and elaborately carved masks. The rock art, continually updated, works as an ongoing historical and social dialogue for these ancient peoples.

Two main themes of rock art that have been identified are bammi, or ritual paintings, and tonu, or other, more mystical or practical paintings. The bemmi paintings show the various stages of the triannual circumcision ceremonies, as well as those of traditional rain dances, burial rituals and fertility dances. The tonu paintings were mostly created to release the potentially dangerous nyama, or life forces, of the dead.

Rock art sites are located near to, or inside, the places where the ritual masks are stored. Here, the participants in mask festivals, the largest of which is the Sigui mask festival, rest before they perform.

Some rock sites remain in use today, particularly the shelter at Kondi Pegue in Sanga, but these are not always open to visitors.

Yaroslavl Russia Is The Most Beautiful Of The ‘Golden Ring’

Yaroslavl Russia Is The Most Beautiful Of The ‘Golden Ring’

Yaroslavl Russia is the most beautiful of the ‘Golden Ring’ of ancient Russian cities to the north and east of Moscow. Its heart is tucked into the angle of the junction between the Volga and the smaller Kotorosl, where Prince Yaroslavl of the Kievan Rus fortified an existing Viking trading post in 1010. It reached the zenith of its political and economic power in the 16th century, and by 1612, during the Polish occupation of Moscow, it was Russia’s second-largest city and briefly, the capital.

Yaroslavl Russia

During the 17th century, Yaroslavl Russia‘s trade barons competed with each other to build ever more glitzy churches, and brought the finest craftsmen and artists from all over Europe to the city. Catherine the Great set her beady eye on its astonishing agglomeration of treasures, and had the medieval city re-cast on neo-classical principles. The radial plan of the modern centre is hers. You can still see more than 20 churches dating back as far as the 12th century, and Catherine’s excellent artistic taste incorporated the porticos, parks, squares and monuments of the 16th and 17th into her master plan.

These days Yaroslavl Russia rests sleepily on its historic laurels. It is still a major industrial centre of petrochemicals, tyres and diesel engines; and the Perekop district across the Kotorosl boasts some of the city’s best parks and churches, including 17th century St John the Baptist on the riverbank slap bang next to the paint factory. It’s unfortunate that Perekop is a seedy, run-down place of pre-Soviet izbas and factories, but the combination of sublime art and 21st century urban reality is typical. Fortunately, the huge residential areas ringing the centre have enough parks and, in Zavolzhsky across the Volga, birch and evergreen forests, for Yaroslavl‘s central masterpieces to retain the verdant riverside settings for which they were created. Try to arrive by riverboat.

The Lake Nakuru National Park Kenya is an important site for both white and black rhinos, brought back from from the brink through a successful breeding effort after poaching had nearly destroyed the populations here. Around the lake zebras and Bohor’s reedbuck can be seen, while clawless otters and hippos can be found in the lake itself or on its shores and klipspringers and rock hyraxes live on the steep cliffs. Other wildlife highlights include grazing animals such as buffaloes, Rothschild’s giraffes, eland, impala, Chandler’s reedbuck and steinbok as well as the lions and leopards that prey on them.

Watch The Famous Tree-Climbing Lions In Lake Manyara Tanzania

The lush, tropical oasis of Lake Manyara Tanzania, located at the foot of the Rift Valley, makes an excellent diversion on your visit to the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. Its shallow, alkaline waters are home to a variety of wildlife including the huge flocks of flamingoes, lured by the crustaceans and algae that thrive in the high salt content.

Lake Manyara Tanzania

The park of Lake Manyara Tanzania, rich in acacia trees, attracts a number of giraffes, baboons, vervet and blue monkeys and there is also a healthy elephant population, although poaching means that the numbers are far below those when Ian Douglas-Hamilton camped here in the 1970s, conducting extensive studies of these beasts which he subsequently published in his classic book Among the Elephants.

While you are in Lake Manyara Tanzania park, you can watch the 350 species of birds that reside here, as well as a variety of mammals including gazelles, impalas, buffaloes, wildebeest, hyenas, hippos and the famous tree-climbing lions.

The best place for viewing lions and elephants, as well as many of the other larger mammals is the Ndala River area. There are two hot springs, Maji Moto Ndogo and Maji Moto, that have large numbers of flamingo if the river waters are low.

Nearby Mto-wa-Mbu is a colourful village where you can buy merchandise, such as kangas, the traditional sarongs worn by Swahili women, tribal brass bracelets and Masai jewellery, from the local townspeople, as well as a large selection of fresh fruit and vegetable.

Lixus Morocco Has Largely Unexplored And Unexcavated Ruins

Lixus Morocco Has Largely Unexplored And Unexcavated Ruins

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the sea, surrounded by hills and forests, with views of the serpentine waters of the Wadi Loukkos River and down to the ocean, Lixus Morocco is a wonderfully scenic site with some impressive ruins of a Roman imperial outpost.

Settled by the Phoenicians in the seventh century BC and later an important Carthaginian site, Lixus Morocco remains a most impressive ruin, for its relics as well as its stunning location.
Lixus Morocco

Largely unexplored and unexcavated, Lixus Morocco has the ruins of an ampitheatre dating back to the first century AD, which would have held a few hundred people. Behind it are the baths, with spectacular mosaics that remain largely intact, except for some damage caused by local children playing in the unguarded area. Unfortunately, one of the victims was the face of the sea god, Neptune, in the centre of one of the largest and most impressive mosaic panels.

Also here is the Christian basilica, located right in the centre of Lixus. Although not as architecturally striking as some of the other buildings, it is still in good condition considering age and is worth a look, particularly from its unadorned roof, offering sweeping views of the valleys below.

If you can imagine back 2,000 years, it would be easy to realise that Lixus Morocco could quite easily have been one of the most beautiful Roman cities in existence.

Travel and Tourism-Spitzkoppe Namibia,A 100-Million Year Old Granite Mountain

Spitzkoppe Namibia, also known as the ‘Matterthorn of Africa’, is located between Usakos and Swakopmund in the Spitskop Nature Reserve. The 100 -million year old granite mountain is one of the most photographed sites in Namibia, particularly during its stunning sunrise and sunset when the brown and grey granite turns stunning saffron and ochre colours.

Spitzkoppe Namibia

Rising a majestic 1, 829 m (6, 000 ft) from the valley floor, the granite massif can often been seen dotted with experienced climbers of all nationalities. Although it is not the country’s highest peak, it is commonly regarded as the most famous. First conquered in 1946 , Spitzkoppe Namibia is a difficult mountain to climb, despite first appearances.

Part of the Erongo Mountains, Spitzkoppe, or Spitskop, was created by the collapse of a giant volcano, creating many interesting and sometimes bizarre rock formations. If you look carefully you may see Bushman paintings, particularly in the area called, appropriately enough, ‘Bushman Paradise’ underneath a large rock awning. Next to Spitzkoppe lies its smaller cousin, ‘Little Spitzkoppe’, at a height of 1, 584 m (5, 197 ft), and the nearby Pontok Mountains.

Trotting throughout the reserve are springbok, gemsbok, eland, Burchell’s zebras and occasionally a camel. Also found in Spitzkoppe Namibia area are the yellow butter trees and the poison tree, which leaks an extremely dangerous white juice that the Bushmen use to poison their arrows.

Travel and Tourism - Linz Austria As A European Capital Of Cultural

The thing to do upon arrival in Linz Austria is to find a café and order Linzer Torte, so you can say have partaken of the world’s oldest cake – or, more accurately, one made to the world’s oldest named cake recipe, first described in 1653. Linz is the third-largest city of Austria and capital of the state of Upper Austria.

Linz Austria

This bustling city straddles the River Danube (Donau) in the north-east of Austria near the Czech border. A major industrial centre, the country’s third-largest city lacks the picture-postcard charm of Graz or Salzburg but more than holds its own when it comes to cultural activities, then and now. Mozart wrote his Symphony No. 36 (the Linz Symphony) here in a house that may still be seen, and composer Anton Bruckner was a local Church organist. This proud tradition has been developed to the point where Linz Austria is famous as a centre for the arts. The open-air Linz Festical takes place besie the Danube at Whitsun. July sees hundreds of clowns, acrobats and mine artist performing on the streets.

In September, there is a music festival in Donaupark, the annual Bruckner season and a spectacular Ars  Electronica Festival at the city’s interactive ‘Museum of the Future’. There are eleven more museum, ranging from the striking new Lentos Museum of Modern Art to the unmissable Museum of the History of Dentistry in upper Austria (no appointment needed). In recognition of its vibrant cultural life, Linz Austria has been nominated as a European Capital of Cultural for 2009. There is a somewhat run-down old town, beneath the castle, serving as a reminder of the city’s ancient origins. This has plenty of places to eat and drink (except on Sunday night) and is worth exploring, offering fascinating buildings including many churches, one of which – St Martun’s, dating from the 8th century – is Austria’s oldest.

Hong Kong Opens New Cruise Terminal Costing $1.1 Billion

Hong Kong Opens New Cruise Terminal Costing $1.1 Billion

Hong Kong opened a large cruise terminal that has come up on the old international airport site. It is perhaps the best example of redevelopment as what used to be the runway will now be able to accommodate the largest cruise ships in the world. The berths in the new cruise terminal have been built to handle liners of up to 220,000 gross tons. Built at a cost of $1.1 billion, the terminal hopes to become Asia’s hub for luxury liners. It was the site for Kai Tak International airport that connected Hong Kong to the rest of the world. Even in its new avatar it will continue connecting Hong Kong to the rest of the world. The only difference is that it will now connect through the seven seas.

Mariner of the Seas was the First Liner to Dock at the New Terminal

The commissioner of Tourism, Hong Kong, Philip Yung was present at the inauguration of the terminal and was excited about the possibilities it had opened. The new facility has enabled Hong Kong to receive mega cruise ships and it is sure to feature in the new itineraries of large cruise liners. It is a happy development for Hong Kong as it will give a boost to the international tourist arrivals in the City. The first mega cruise liner to dock at the new terminal was the Royal Caribbean’s 1,020 feet (311 meters) long “Mariner of the Seas”. The luxury cruise liner brought 3,000 passengers to Hong Kong.

The Site Earlier Had the Airport that Was Closed in 1998

The guests were impressed by the new facility as it provides a 360 degree panoramic view of the city. A troupe of lion dancers welcomed the guests as they disembarked from the ship. Kai Tak functioned as the international airport of Hong Kong for over 70 years but was always considered difficult for the incoming aircrafts because the site was surrounded by tall mountains. The airport was closed in 1998 after the new Chek Lap Kok International Airport was developed. The large tract of land has been put to good use now. The new cruise terminal will become fully functional in the next quarter. However, the second berth will be ready for use only next year in 2014.

Luxury Apartment To Let In Moscow At $50K

Luxury Apartment To Let In Moscow At $50K

There are so many things in the present world that actually make us realise that maybe the so-called ‘financial hard times’ are just the woes of a very few. We know that counries have been very busy promoting tourism in their states and for that they are offering great discount packages too. But perhaps, Moscow does not believe in giving quality at low prices. From what we hear, an expensive rental apartment in the Russian capital charges $50,000 per month.

DOKI Real Estate Agency is handling the property located very strategically near the Arbatskaya metro station in downtown Moscow. Apparently, the 21 rooms which include 8 bedrooms and six bathrooms will keep your travelling group quite happy and comfortable.

By the way, four parking lots also come with the apartment in reference. However, the real estate agent hasn’t been successful in finding a tenant. Well, with a price that high there shall be very few seekers. What say?
