Pentax, now part of Ricoh, introduces its new X-5 digital camera with a powerful 26x optical zoom camera with a focal length of 22.3mm ultra-wide angle to 580mm super telephoto (35mm equivalent). There is also Auto Picture mode that automatically assesses the subject’s conditions and selects the best shooting mode from 16 distinctive shooting options. Users may use the quick-set mode dial to easily select the desired shooting mode — from a total of 10 modes including the hands-off Auto Picture, Scene, Program, Manual, Landscape, and Handheld Night Snap. The camera’s Auto Macro function will automatically switch the focus mode of the camera to Macro when it detects a close subject, while the the Handheld Night Scene shooting mode helps the photographer capture blur-free nighttime images by taking multiple images at once and blending them into a single composite picture. The ultra-zoom shooter is also capable of high-speed burst shooting of up to 10fps, for a maximum of 30 images in a single sequence. Its Fast Face Detection technology can quickly finds up to 32 subjects in any scene.

The Pentax X-5 is capable of Full HD 1080p video recording at 30fps with h.264 compression. The long-zoom camera has an electronic viewfinder with diopter adjustment for a clear view even under bright sunshine.

Pentax will release the X-5 in September for $279.95. It comes in black and silver.
