Travel and Tourism - Linz Austria As A European Capital Of Cultural

The thing to do upon arrival in Linz Austria is to find a café and order Linzer Torte, so you can say have partaken of the world’s oldest cake – or, more accurately, one made to the world’s oldest named cake recipe, first described in 1653. Linz is the third-largest city of Austria and capital of the state of Upper Austria.

Linz Austria

This bustling city straddles the River Danube (Donau) in the north-east of Austria near the Czech border. A major industrial centre, the country’s third-largest city lacks the picture-postcard charm of Graz or Salzburg but more than holds its own when it comes to cultural activities, then and now. Mozart wrote his Symphony No. 36 (the Linz Symphony) here in a house that may still be seen, and composer Anton Bruckner was a local Church organist. This proud tradition has been developed to the point where Linz Austria is famous as a centre for the arts. The open-air Linz Festical takes place besie the Danube at Whitsun. July sees hundreds of clowns, acrobats and mine artist performing on the streets.

In September, there is a music festival in Donaupark, the annual Bruckner season and a spectacular Ars  Electronica Festival at the city’s interactive ‘Museum of the Future’. There are eleven more museum, ranging from the striking new Lentos Museum of Modern Art to the unmissable Museum of the History of Dentistry in upper Austria (no appointment needed). In recognition of its vibrant cultural life, Linz Austria has been nominated as a European Capital of Cultural for 2009. There is a somewhat run-down old town, beneath the castle, serving as a reminder of the city’s ancient origins. This has plenty of places to eat and drink (except on Sunday night) and is worth exploring, offering fascinating buildings including many churches, one of which – St Martun’s, dating from the 8th century – is Austria’s oldest.
