In September, there is a music festival in Donaupark, the annual Bruckner season and a spectacular Ars Electronica Festival at the city’s interactive ‘Museum of the Future’. There are eleven more museum, ranging from the striking new Lentos Museum of Modern Art to the unmissable Museum of the History of Dentistry in upper Austria (no appointment needed). In recognition of its vibrant cultural life, Linz Austria has been nominated as a European Capital of Cultural for 2009. There is a somewhat run-down old town, beneath the castle, serving as a reminder of the city’s ancient origins. This has plenty of places to eat and drink (except on Sunday night) and is worth exploring, offering fascinating buildings including many churches, one of which – St Martun’s, dating from the 8th century – is Austria’s oldest.
