China Travel Guide
The construction of the Great Wall was started by the Qin dynasty between the seventh and eighth centuries BC and took more than 1,800 years to complete. It is believed that it was originally intended as military fortification against intrusion from the north, but over time grew to become not only a symbol of defence, but also of the great power of the emperor.
The architecture of the Great wall is a marvel of ancient building work. Weaponry of the time consisted only of swords, spears, lances and bows and arrows, so walls with walkways, watchtowers and signal towers, together with moats, became an important part of defensive strategy. After the work done by the Qin dynasty (221-206 BC), the later sections of the wall include an even more sophisticated defensive system with garrison towns, garrison posts, walkways, blockhouses, additional wall structures, watchtowers and beacon towers enabling the imperial court to stay in touch with the military and gave the frontier troops the facilities to carry out defence effectively. The Chinese were already familiar with the techniques of wall-building by the time of the Spring and Autumn Period.

To the uninformed tourist, the wall is just a majestic crumbling feat hike through the various sections, it is difficult to comprehend how many men it must have taken to build this massive structure nearly 8 m (26 ft) across and how the enormous quantities of stones must have been transported here. Looking out over the spectacular emerald hills and valleys you can sense the history and understand what effort and sacrifice must have taken place to enable the construction of such a massive undertaking. It is truly one of the most memorable experiences that you will ever have.
